Our final excursion in Egypt was to Alexandria, a gem on the Mediterranean Sea. Once home to a great Lighthouse and a Library that was the envy of the ancient world, it is now a very different city.

We started at the catacombs. Due to the low numbers of tourists owing to the unrest in Iran, we had the place to ourselves for the beginning of our visit. It was nice to be able to wander through the old crypts without crowds, but also a little creepy.

We made a short stop at the coliseum. Once a hub of ancient Alexandrian life, it is now a quiet place to reflect on the changes over a millennia.

We then went to the fort that stands where the famous lighthouse once stood. After the earthquake that toppled the lighthouse, a military garrison was built on its foundations, so today, there is nothing to see of the ancient wonder.
The view from the towers of the fortress were amazing. The Mediterranean sea was as blue as you can imagine it, dotted with colorful boats.

Our final stop was at the new Library of Alexandria. While it may not be the most significant of the modern world, it was still a sight to behold. We wondered through and saw many interesting art works and cultural exhibits in addition to the stacks of books.
