I don’t know what I expected of Egyptian food, but was very happy with our options.

First, let me start with one of my favorite traveling hobbies, scouting out the new chip flavors. At one Euro per bag, the Lay’s snack bags were a deal. I tried several varieties. The standard is called “Salt” here. There were also several flavors not usually seen in the US, or at least differently named, such as the Chili, Kebap, Sirloin, Cheese, and my favorite, Paprika.

There was a small food court next to our hotel in Cairo. While there were several restaurant fronts, it appeared most of the dishes came out from the same kitchen. The first night was probably the best tasting of our visits, but took a LONG time. We had a mixed grill plate and a sweet and sour chicken. Neither looked like what was on the menu, but still tasted great. We also made a stop for pizza one evening. There were also several fresh produce stands nearby.

Our cruise had an interesting buffet daily, including both standard western dishes like chicken and beef, but also had some more local such as eggplant and couscous based dishes.

On our trek to Alexandria, we had a great fish meal. The restaurant was called Fish Market 2 and had a beautiful view of the Mediterranean. On our way , we went by the meat market, featuring lots of chickens, ducks, and rabbit that would make their way to a plate.
